Walkerhill Douglas House Garden

Project Description:
Location:
Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, South Korea
Douglas House, named after U.S Army General Douglas McArthur, was built after the Korean War as a resort for U.S. military officers. The hotel designed by Kim, Soo-geun, stretches in curvilinear form across the valley, following the original terrain and minimizing the impact. For a period, it operated as a general hotel without renovation, finally being remodeled in 2018. In designing the garden, CA respected Kim's design spirit, so the main circulation was created by removing the existing wooden walkway and following the original terrain as much as possible. In addition, old trees were preserved, and construction proceeded with a minimum impact. ‘Douglas Garden’ is private property, but is also a public openspace facing a roadway, and thus always open to public.
